A Vintage Little Darling: Mixed Media Card

Crazy Kicks In

Just when I though life couldn’t get more busy I was looking over my weekly calendar and I have something going on everyday this week. Something besides regular life. I have a baby shower at the end of this week so I am frantically putting together a practice cake. It is going rather slow and I am wondering if I am going to get the practice cake done before I have to start the real cake. I am trying my hand at one of those beautiful naked cakes, something I have always wanted to try. It is only two tiers but 4 cakes all together. Along with a cake, I am making a banner, guest book and in charge of games. I found a rather humorous game that is new to me. It is called ‘Crap Happens.” You take 4-6 diapers and melt different chocolate bars inside the diaper. The guests then have to guess what kind of chocolate bar each diaper has inside. I love this idea because it look like real poop! Even at 33 years old I can’t contain a giggle when someone says poop.
As you can see I am slaving away making cake, games with chocolate and mixed media crafts. Haha! So, with limited crafty time this week I only have this card to share.

Creating the Mixed Media Card

The Challenge

In my few minutes to craft this week I decided to keep it simple and make a card. My goal was to clear up a bit of the mess on my worktable. I think a neat work space is a dream because lets face it…who can create when everything is put in it’s proper place? So, I challenged myself  to only use items on my work table for this card. The image was taken from an older project  that was collecting dust. And the stamped sentiment was leftover from a previous project. It feels so good to use up scraps.

Tea Day

And while I am typing this post, I am drinking tea and my elderberry syrup is simmering away on the stove, making my house smell like Christmas (cloves, cinnamon, ginger). I love making my own medicine especially now that the school year is here. My kids always end up sick once school starts so we use a lot of elderberry syrup. And did I mention that it is yummy?!!
Happy Tea Day!

  • Your card is fantastic, so vintage and well composed. You sure have a lot to do this week, but it sounds like fun. Glad you have filled diapers which smell good! I’ve been drinking a lot of ginger tea, too. Enjoy the rest of your week, hugs, Valerie

  • First, I wanted to let you know, I added your link to T Stands For Tuesday. This was a very confusing month with both T and Second on the 2nd landing on the same day.
I swear Kate, I’m going to call you the Queen of layers. Even when using bits and pieces from your craft table, you put layers together that many of us would overlook. This card is incredibly beautiful.
I’ve never had elderberry syrup, but I like the thought of ginger tea. I’m quite certain the aroma that comes from those spices make me wish Christmas was on its way.
Thanks for sharing your card and your tea and elderberry syrup with us for T this nearly Tuesday.
BTW, that diaper game sounds so, so funny. You have a LOT on your plate with all that is going on. What I really want to know is what is a naked cake?

    • You are so sweet. I would gladly accept the title of Queen of Layers as I love layering! As for a naked cake, it is just a cake that you can see through the icing. It is not completely covered hence the ‘naked’.
Thank you for adding my link. I was confused as I am not sure what the 2nd landing is. I will have to go back a do a better job of reading. 😉 Have a great evening.

      • Second on the 2nd, which is where you originally posted your link, is where we show a post that was published at some former date/time. You may bring back any post you choose, one you are proud of, or maybe one you posted before anyone knew our blog existed. Regardless, the only requirement is, it must have been shown/published sometime in the past, as my two posts from 2014 were this month.
When I said the 2nd lands on the same day as T Day, I should have clarified and said the 2nd post “occurs” on the same day as T Day. I hope that clears up any confusion I may have caused you.

  • Elizabeth is right ! You are a Queen of layering and I would add you are also a Queen of composing and colours! A beautiful card and that sounds so very fun with the chocolate in the diaper -lol! Have fun with all the prepairing ! I love elderberry sirup as well !
Happy T-Day and happy rest of your week – enjoy!

  • Gorgeous layers on your project, it looks wonderful.
It sounds like you are having a busy week , the cake sounds special and so does the chocolate in the diapers.
Happy T day wishes and the syrup you are making sounds delicious.

  • Wow, it sounds like you’ve got a busy week ahead of you packed with lots of fun! I love baking and I’m sure your cake will be a great success 😁. The little darling card you made is so adorable and, as always, I love the layers of interest you create! It’s great to see you at the T Party too, enjoy your week and have a very Happy T Day! J 😊

  • HI Kate! I love the idea of making your own elderberry syrup medicine… I have fond memories of elderberries… stuffing my face when i was little and my older brothers took me fishing… So glad you had the time to join us for tea.. you sound very , very busy! Breathe .. relax.. i’m sure your cake and everything will turn out fine… Happy T day! Hugs! deb

  • What a sweet card! It’s amazing what you can create using scraps. I like to make my own herbal medicines too. Reading your post, I could almost smell yours simmering away on the stove!

  • Hi Kate,
Funny … I’ve been doing the same thing lately – challenging myself to create with what is right at hand. It helps me actually finish pieces. And I’ve been surprised by how nice they usually come out. Good luck with the naked cake. That sounds very challenging. I bet all the ladies will be in stitches over the “crap happens” game.
    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen

    • I use it for prevention of illness but also when they are sick. It is safe for kids and it can be taken every hour. I have used it for viruses, strep throat and colds. I love making medicines! If you have any questions I would be happy to send you some links.

  • oh the chocolate in the diapers…. i´m sure you will have lots of fun with it.
i love elderberry syrup if it made from the blossoms, but i can´t stand the smell of the berries themselves… though it is very healthy.
    happy t-day!

  • Fab background, Kate! And a lovely card, the idea of using your stuff is something I love and try to do myself.
Never heard of the diaper chocoltae, but what fun!!
