Always Be A Mermaid: Mixed Media Art Journal

Always Be Yourself Unless You Can Be a Mermaid, Than always Be a Mermaid…

There is something alluring about shimmering iridescent scales and underwater palaces that draw me to the sea, specifically mermaids. I have always loved creatures of the fantasy world. I cannot pinpoint why but perhaps it is because they are what we humans dream about. Made up scenarios are always more appealing than real life, at least in my experience. Imagination is an amazing gift that we have been given. And most of us, if not all, have used it to escape the real world. Escaping from everyday life, surrounded by an ocean that shimmers like diamonds, sounds like the ultimate vacation or fantasy-land. And the tail wouldn’t be so bad as long as my legs came back on dry land, mainly because I don’t think the hubby would be a fan of a permanent fish tail. 😉

Hubby and I are not really beach people because we leave ‘vacation’ baked and chafed. It never fails. We spend several hours for one day in the sun and we leave looking like lobsters with badly applied sunscreen and rashes from the sand in our swimwear. The idea of sun and surf sounds good but I much prefer my air-conditioned home to the oppressive heat of the beach. With this being said, I can’t say that I would make a good mermaid except for the swimming part and of course the sparkling scales.

Creating The Journal Layout

On to the next layout in the Mermaid journal. The background was stenciled in Grunge Paste using the Decorative 6-Petal flower Screen by StencilGirl. I used PaperArtsy infusions in the background and then rubbed white embossing powder over top of the texture. I used a Arabic script stamp in the background. Most of the stamps are PaperArtsy with the exception of a few.

The rest are items from my stash. I found the quote off of Pinterest.

  • I LOVE your mermaid page Kate. Like you I burn at the beach in the worst way, and sitting in the hot baking sun isn’t appealing. However, give me the beach after mid day and off season because it’s a great place to walk and I love the water. Anyhow, you made a fantastic page for another mermaid fan. Hope you’re having a super weekend. Hugs-Erika

  • I’m with you on the heat, Kate. I will take my AC and lack of sun any day. I used to be a sun goddess, then noticed what it was doing to my skin, so now I stay out of the sun as much as possible. However, I DO love your gorgeous mermaid. She is gorgeous and so are all the layers you created. Of course, the fish side with all that texture made me want to run my hand over the spread. It looks like something anyone would want to touch. I also love how you add thread. It adds to the appeal. It’s a great entry, and a beautiful spread.

  • Your mermaid page is beautiful, love all the texture and colours. I love going to the beach, but am not a big sun-bathing fan, as I burn so easily, so I need to keep covered up. As a kid I was fascinated by the poem ‘The forsaken merman’ from Matthew Arnold, my Auntie used to read it to me, and it always reduced me to tears! Have a good weekend, hugs, Valerie

  • I mostly have to agree with you about the beach Kate. I do love going for beach walks but to sunbathe or swim in the sea, that is definitely not my thing! I adore your double spread .. it is absolutely stunning!! Love the bright background and the textures are simply amazing .. must feel wonderful to rub your hand across it! Have a fabulous week! hugs xx

  • Beautiful pages! The texture you achieve always amazes me and I’m loving the bright colours on your mermaid pages too – stunning 😀. I don’t sunbathe although I have an olive skin complection so do not burn in the sun either. A beach holiday appeals to me as I love swimming and snorkeling in the sea, I like to be active so we never just sit in the sun 😀. Wishing you a happy and creative new week! J 😊

  • i´m with you… no sunbathing. gives me itching pimples and a sun burn.
but the mermaid tales are fascinating and so is your artwork… i love the shimmer you added and all this texture!
    have a great week!

  • Those pages are amazing Kate – so well composed and all the texture and colours and details are just BRILLIANT!
It reminds me of the time my daughter was 11 and wanted me to sew her a Mermaid tail…. it was very popular at those times to be a mermaid as there were a TV sereal and she got hooked with the idea!
—–shameful ! We tried it and it turned out horrible but she blessedly used her Meramid tail just in our garden pool and not publically!
I am not a sunbather at all and never was one . Always just in the shadow.
I love the sea but more in the early mornings and late nights in summer. Not when the sun burns down – no not for me!
    Hugs, Susi

  • How funny! I’m not a beach person either. One day per year is sufficient for me. I’d much rather be in the pool or in the mountains playing in a river. But there is so much beauty in the sea, worlds unfathomable. Another exquisite spread and I adore the stencil work on this one. Fabulosa! 🙂 Hugs, Autumn

  • Kate it’s been so long since I’ve been able to visit your lovely blog, but I am ever so happy to have this opportunity today! I came to wish you congratulations on your Top Choice over at Love to Create! So well deserved for this fantastic textural beauty! I adore your theme and LOVELY collages! As for me, I live at the beach and rarely set foot on it! Too many people and either too hot or too cold depending on the season. I think fall is the best time for a stroll on the beach. Have a great week!
