Experience Exploration: Mixed Media Art Journal Cover

Exploration

Growing up we always visited the the same places for vacation. It was either Virginia to visit family or along the coast to beautiful New England. While I enjoyed these beautiful spots, I realize how little of the world that I have seen in my thirty four years. My hubby has been to at least 6 countries outside of the USA while I come in at only 3. Hubby and I both agree that we want to spend time traveling in retirement. Or before we get too old to move without a lift chair and walker.

I have noticed that many of the ladies that link to Tea Tuesday are always sharing pictures of their travels, most of which include beautiful food. I love eating out! And I am looking forward to that almost as much as seeing new places. I find a delicious meal in an quaint setting just as much fun, if not more fun, than visiting museums and historical sites.

Our summer vacation this year is taking us to Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  I have never been to the Smoky mountains and it makes me think of my favorite tv series, Christy. I am looking forward to seeing a whole new state as well as tasting food that I didn’t have to cook! Well, I will have to cook a few nights but my amazing In Laws take care of the other nights. This will be our first vacation in two years and I am a little giddy. I feel like a school girl looking forward to the last day of school. Of course when I come home I will have mountains of laundry, exhausted children and be in need of a mini vacation to recover from vacation, but who cares? It will be fun! And I will have another State checked off of my list.

Creating the Journal Cover

I used a tutorial online to create the journal from brown paper grocery bags. It was a lot of work cutting, drying and ironing each page before sewing them together into signatures but I am pleased with the result. With 3 signatures I have a very thick journal.

For the cover I used a piece of patterned paper stenciled with the Decorative 6 Petal Flower Screen. I used gold ink and a PaperArtsy stamp and stencil in the background.

I layered a piece of flocked card stock on top and then another piece of paper stenciled and stamped. I bundled up some twigs and tied them with string. Liquid pearls, doodling and thread were used to embellish.

I am loving the way this journal cover turned out but am still undecided as to how I am going to fill it up. So far it only has one layout, which you can see HERE.

Tea Day

For my beverage to day I am sharing my mug of Strawberry Pineapple Green Tea , as I play along with Elizabeth and the ladies for tea Day. I currently reading the The Time Traveler’s Wife for my book club. I am behind in my reading but hoping football season will lend more time. My hubby is counting down the days.

Happy Tea Day,
Kate

Like you, I find eating out a mini vacation. I even told my foodie friend that the other day. But spending time at home with a good cup of something enjoyable to sip is equally enjoyable for me. Thank you for sharing your lovely journal cover, your tea, and your upcoming vacation with us for T this Tuesday, dear Kate.

  • How exciting to be going on vacation! I have been to Gatlinburg and we really enjoyed our time at The Smoky Mountain National Park, it’s such a beautiful place! 😁. Wow, your journal cover looks amazing ! I love the colours and all the detail that you created. Your green tea sounds delicious, can you taste the strawberries and pineapple? Wishing you a very Happy T Day! J 😊 x

  • I love your thick journal made from brown paper grocery bags. The flocked card stock, the thread, and the twigs bundled together give the cover a lovely natural look. I’m sure you are going to have lots of fun filling the journal! I hope you have a lovely summer vacation. It sounds wonderful!

  • A fabulous journal cover, great textures and layers.
I hope you have a super holiday when it is time for you to travel, anticipation is part of the excitement of the journey.

  • You’re right, Kate. No matter what you come home to (well almost whatever), a getaway is marvelous and refreshing. I think that’s more the case when you don’t travel a lot. Hubby and I haven’t had a vacay for almost a year. So we’ve planned taking a trip to Texas in October. For me, the planning and anticipating is at least half the fun.

Do you call that a junk journal? Whatever -it’s gorgeous! And I already saw the first two pages om Paper Artsy – fabulous!

    Happy T-day! Hugs, Eileen

  • This journal cover is stunning Kate! I love the bundled twigs and the soft fabric roses make such a lovely contrast. I haven’t as yet made a paper bag journal but, looking at this gorgeous example I am sorely tempted. Might have to take a look at a few videos I think! LOL!
I hope you have a fabulous holiday and am looking forward to seeing the pages you will create with the photos!!
Have a wonderful day! hugs x

  • Wow Kate! I love your journal! When we had young children we visited the same places so often we got recognised! Don’t worry about being too old and not being able to get around, children grow up so quickly it won’t be long before you can visit farther afield! Belated Happy T day! Chrisx

  • Hi Kate! Yes, my husband has me beat in traveling too, but there’s no place like home my friend! I do hope your traveling plans come true though. I just love how you used these incredible stamps. I’ve really missed visiting your blog while away! It’s great to get a dose of your fabulous art again. Big hugs, Autumn

  • Your album is beautiful! I always enjoy looking at your pages and whatever you make, Kate.
I love Mixed Media, but I also love other styles, You will probably have noticed that 😉
Traveling is so nice, husband and I did that too. We have been to your beautiful country twice ( West coast and Colorado/Utah) and have been to many other countries in Europe.
Do no wait untill retirement (if you can,).
My father in law always said… when I am retired then …. his health stopped him then.
But yes… as Autums says… there is no place like home.

  • What a totally cool cover!!Love that wild black & white paper! OH My Gosh- I so can’t believe I missed this! Love your layers Kate, you do layer with interest,my dear! “)

Hope your vacation was wonderful! I know when we were in Gatlinburg it was an absolutely stunning area and the food we ate was fabulous as well!
    Enjoy!
