Eye Love Jars: Daily Art Practice
Couch Talk
Somedays I wonder what I did all day. I can’t believe that it is already February, and we have a full schedule. Last week, we had a flexible learning day. It is a new thing that the schools are doing instead of calling a school cancelation, usually for weather. The children stay home, check in with their teachers in the morning and complete work online, but without instruction. My youngest is in kindergarten and it was a challenge for her to complete an 8-hour day of work without the usual breaks. But thankfully it took 2 hours with me guiding her instead of 8 and we were able to enjoy the rest of the day. She requested that we bake together so we made some yummy Banana Chocolate Chip Sourdough Bread before lunch and still had time for a nap!
Watercolor Daily Journal
I’ll take a break from sharing shopfronts this week and show you a few pages from my daily sketchbook. In the beginning of January, I joined in with a challenge on Instagram called Extraordinary in the Ordinary. A prompt was given for 7 days to draw things in your house. The first day’s prompt was bottles and jars. I found a bunch of jars in my cabinet, snapped pictures and sat down to paint. The olives are my favorite. I found jars with visible items inside to be interesting. Now, I want to paint more jars.
One of my goals for this year is to learn watercolor portraits. I have decided to take each facial feature and study it individually instead of going big right away. I got this StencilGirl stencil and it has been the perfect tool to help me practice. Eyes are so interesting. I took a picture of every one’s eye in our house so I would have plenty of pictures to practice from. The second eye (hazel) is my daughters and the third one (brown) is mine. I am working on a whole page of these so more eyes to come.
Tea Day
I am joining the tea day ladies, hosted by Elizabeth. My drink today is Signature Tea Tin – Young Hyson 3.5oz Loose Tea. I have a citrus flavored tea from this brand, and I am wanting to try other flavors. This green tea sounds like something I would enjoy, not to mention that the tin is pretty. If you have tried this tea, I would love to hear what you think.
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
Hi Kate, Sounds like a very special school day for sure. I think that is a good idea to be able to still have school at home instead of going back and making up the lost day. Your art is spectacular-hugs Kathy
Painting only eyes is fascinating. Vivian Swift, a blogger who documents her watercolor practice, always paints they eyes first — though she usually does portraits of pets.

Great looking jar paintings Kate, and oh my – the eyelashes on those eyes are brilliant- such fine intricate lashes! Happy T day!
I always find it so amazing how a little bit of white in an eye drawing not only gives a glass look but brings the eye to life. I can’t believe your daughter is now in kindergarten. Wow.. Time does fly. As does each day too. What grade is your oldest boy in? I hope you have a happy T day Kate, and week ahead too. hugs-Erika
Eyes are interesting. That stencil looks like a great tool; I agree. No, I am sorry I haven’t tasted that tea, so can’t help you. Happy T Day.
Great art, no matter what you do, it comes out great! My respect to you and your talent and thank you for always sharing, makes me smile every time, happy T-Day!
Wonderful water colours. The eyes are fabulous. Hugs, Valerie
Those jars are amazing. I agree that the olives are the best, but only because of the contents. All are great. And those eyes are out of this world. Truly lovely and a great stencil, too. Sorry. I have not tasted that tea, but it sure sounds delicious. thanks for sharing your watercolors and your tea with us for T this Tuesday, Kate.
I like the idea of a flexible learning day. I have dried apricots in my pantry but no preserves. That sounds like a definitely addition to my grocery lists 🙂 So much detail in your eyes! Gorgeous!
Happy T Tuesday
Sounds like you had such a lovely time with your youngest and that sourdough bread sounds delicious! Loving your paintings, such beautiful illustrations and wow, those eyes are spectacular 😁. I’d happily join you for a cuppa too, Happy T Day wishes! Hugs Jo x
Your watercolors are amazing! Happy T Day
