Vacation Documented Through Art
I mentioned last week that we had been away at the beach. Instead of showing my beach pictures, I am going to share the art that I made while I was away. I made an effort to bring a sketch book with me everywhere and in my down time at the house, I painted. The map (above), I made before leaving for the beach. I found a vintage map online and loosely copied it.
My art supplies that I brought with me were also painted on a page before I left.
This next layout was started the first day that we were at the beach. I painted while everyone else built sandcastles or played in the waves. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable day. I watched a few water tutorials before leaving so it was nice to have an opportunity to try it out.
One of the rainy days (we had three), we spent at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. I highly recommend this museum. The following quote came up throughout the tour and I just love it. It’s a great reminder to stand up for even the smallest of freedoms that are threatened as it can open the door to the bigger ones being taken away.
Our last day at the beach was spent in the ER as my son opened a beach chair and got his fingers caught. He ended up with a detached nail and a broken finger. Lots of excitement and tears but he was very brave. We ended the day with dinner at Fuller’s Raw Bar and a walk on Buckroe Beach. I referenced my painting from a photo I took of the front of the restaurant.
I had a full pound of shrimp all to myself.
Sketching
Before leaving for the beach, I bought a small pocket size sketchbook to carry with me. It is great for museums.
And that’s all I have.
Tea Day
I am joining the tea ladies hosted by Elizabeth and Bleubeard. It wouldn’t be vacation if I didn’t come home with some new tea. I purchased this West Indies Citrus at the American Revolution gift shop. It smells delicious and I am looking forward to trying it. I had never heard of this company but they have a nice selection of teas, all named after a historical event, person or place. I may have to purchase some more.

What a great way to remember your vacation Kate. You have some fantastic pages. And a patient family to let you sketch. Your poor son. too. Darn, I really need to get back to sketching, but this “summer” and loss of work just keep me down. It´s Autumn-temps again here, dark, grey. But… seeing your sketches sure made me lift up!

Love that you did so much sketching to remember your vacation. I can never seem to get any art done when I’m enjoying the beach- it’s always my art break as well as vacation;) Aw, your poor son. Glad it wasn’t more serious and that it was on the last day- and not the first. Let us know how you like your new tea- I think I’d like that one. Happy T day!

But I’m sorry to hear your son hurt himself. I’m sure his finger will be okay eventually, but it’s not a nice memory of his vacation.
Your citrus herbal infusion sounds just up my street (I don’t usually have anything with tea in it) and I’m sure it was very refreshing during warm weather.

I’ve never been to Virginia, but I have a friend who says it’s the perfect place to live. I’m so sorry about your son’s injury and trust it’ll be completely healed in no time. Your teas always sound delicious. My teas are always boring lol Happy T Tuesday!
Love all your pages. I will be revisiting this one often. Very interested in the tutorials you watched. Off to the beach now. I may bring my sketchbook after your inspiration. Kids are full of surprises. Even an ordinary day offers something!

The art work is really fantantic, I love your beach, I haven’t done anything like that in ages. I did some water colouring when we went to Scotland about 30 odd years ago, only because there was nothing to do, apart from fishing. ( and not even that on a Sunday!)My girls loved the fishing, they caught salmon and eels! Couldn’t walk in the heather as there wasn’t even rabbit runs to follow, I put sticks in the ground so I could find my way back. Painful for the little ones finger! When I was about four, a ‘friend’ knocked out the the support bar from a deckchair causing it to collapse and trapping my eight fingers, I screamed, she run home! Luckily mum heard. You put a lot of work into getting ready for the vacation. It must have been gratifying to get so many wonderful drawings and paintings while you were there. You had some beautiful pieces to share with us. Sorry to read about your son’s accident. I know that put a damper on your last day of vacation.

Your watercolors are really beautiful. My mother loved to do watercolors at a beach site because the humidity was high and thus the paper stayed wet longer. I especially love your painting of the watercolor box and brushes.

Your watercolours are fabulous Kate! I am preparing a journal to go away soon – maybe I’ll take a small sketchbook too! My son has broken a finger too and has a black nail – he is 42 and says it was really painful at first so your son has been super brave, Your tea sounds interesting. Belated Happy T Day, Chrisx
