It’s A Sketchbook Revival : Daily Art Practice

Couch Talk

My weeks have suddenly become a bit busier now that work is in the mix, but it is a good busy. I love that my shifts are only 3 hours a day and I can pick the days that I work. The rest of the week consists of household chores, Dr.’s appointments and errands. I try to fit all my errands into one day due to the rising cost of fuel. But then I am running here and there with my children’s extra school activities so I am not sure that I am saving much money.

With small amounts of time here and there I have found it helpful to work in my sketchbook instead of trying to complete an entire painting. It certainly takes the stress off when I can play or experiment with ideas.

Daily Art Practice: Sketchbook Revival 2022

I am not sure exactly how I found this free course, Sketchbook Revival 2022, but it probably showed up as an add on Facebook. I wasn’t sure how much I would like the content but I was pleasantly surprised. The whole course was a week long, two classes per day. The replays are still up until April 30th so you can still join. A lot of the supplies are things that most of us have on our craft desk. I didn’t have time to watch all the classes so I picked a few that sounded interesting. I love that this course is centered around the sketchbook. I frequently go blank when starting a new page, so I love finding new and exciting exercises to fill the blank page.

The page above was made in the first class I took. It was all about color swatching the watercolor palette and then using those swatches as the background for doodles. It was relaxing and forced me to be a bit creative.

Next, was the page below, a class featuring zoom screens. Who would have though that this topic would be interesting? I had a lot of fun with this one and would like to try it again to get faster and to perfect my face shapes.

This last one was a mixed media floral study. I didn’t think I would be interested in this but I learned a lot about breaking down a complicated picture into smaller studies. This ones was a combination of watercolor and oil pastels. This was the first time I used my oil pastels since high school. I am glad that I didn’t throw them out, although I was tempted a few time over the years.

I would love to hear if have ever participated in this online class.

Tea Day

I am joining the tea day ladies, hosted by Elizabeth and Bleubeard. My Tea today is The Republic of Tea Ginger Peach White Tea. Ginger and peach is one of my favorite tea combinations.

What is your favorite online Art class or instruction blog?

Happy Tea Day,

Kate

  • These are great Kate! I found this on IG and though I watched all of the lessons I only recently went back to try the ones that especially caught my attention. I’ll be sharing them on both the blog and probably IG soon . I want to get a few more done before the lessons go away:) Happy T day!

  • Hi Kate, I love seeing your art each week-so thank you for sharing. I really love your flowers with the oils especially.
    Happy T

  • Life might be busy but it sounds like you are enjoying it right now Kate.. Looks like you’ve had fun sketching.. And don’t you like that ginger peach tea? I have some of this and it’s tasty. I hope you have a great T day and week ahead. Hugs-Erika

  • I did a couple lessons of this class – I have been joining the Sketchbook Revival for a few years now and every year I can only do a couple classes. I loved the bird and cat painting ones, that was real fun and I learned a lot. I also liked Carla Sonheim’s class, she’s a quirky character which I really like. Your Zoom portraits look great!

  • Hi Kate!!! Love your sketchbook studies! I have never participated in that class but i watch alot of instructional videos on YouTube.. I like ‘Ginger Cook’, and ‘The Frugal Crafter’, ‘Michelle the Painter’…. just to name a few.. I might be able to handle a 3 hrs a day workday! Take care and Happy T day! Hugs! deb

  • I joined this class as I have done for several years. I still haven’t had time to view any of the videos, though. I am more into the mixed media aspect than the drawing aspect. Yours looks great. I am glad you found this because Karen will invite you again next year, too.

Your tea looks wonderful. Ginger peach sounds like something I would enjoy. Thanks for sharing your wonderful sketches and paintings, along with your tea with us for T this Tuesday, Kate.

  • Your watercolours are a joy to look at, all so pretty. Great idea with the swatches too. Glad you are enjoying work again! Have a great week, happy T Day, hugs, Valerie

  • Great you can pick your working hours like that and yes, am I glad I do not even have a car no more!
7 steps and I´m at my work-place, yipee!

Love your art, so sad I find no time to join – I did not even start with watercolor at all!
Happy T-Day to you, hope I can join better soon.

  • 3 hours a day would not work for me as it takes me 4 hours to drive to and from work. I like 6 hours – not too much and not too little. Love that Ginger peach tea

  • Yes Kate, I have been doing sketchbook Revival, I think this is my third year. I nearly forgot about it this time as I wasn’t checking my email so I have been watching as much as possible while they are still available. did you see the cat class? That was so cute. Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx

  • Ohhh first I love ginger peach anything. LOL The art is amazing. I have done a few classes with the Revival site. It’s been awhile. Yes, we try to do everything in one drive out too. Even though gas has come down a bit it is still $4.45 a gallon. I really like the flowers you did. Have a nice day.

  • To answer your question, I once took a free Kit & Clouder coloring class online. but wasn’t live. I will go check out the Sketchbook class. Thanks for sharing. I love the Zoom painting. I do Zoom a lot with crafting friends. Happy T Day.

  • I always love seeing your watercolor sketches, and it’s really good that you can do some exercises from the course when you are working. 3 hours sounds ideal. Lucky you.
Yes, petrol is getting expensive here as well. It was 2,49 euros a liter the other day.. Diesel has always been cheaper than petrol here, but recently it’s the other way round. ( our car is diesel).
    Happy belated T-Day,
    Hugs,
    Lisca
