Couch Talk


It was another busy week, cleaning out my house, running errands and preparing for company over the weekend. We celebrated Independence Day with family which was a great start to the week. Now it is back to work.

I am surprised at just how much planning goes into our Tea and Poetry Day. I do research online for books, crafts and food, make a shopping list, pick out library books, print out a craft and then make all the food. I do this over the course of a week which takes a few hours total aside from making the food. This coming week we will be taking a break. We will probably just read a chapter of a book and eat a sweet treat that we have on hand, but this is what we did last week.


Tea and Poetry: King Tutankamun




Our theme this week was one of my favorites. I have always loved the culture of Ancient Egypt so this one was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I didn’t plan very well which stressed me out but we enjoyed our time together. Here are a few of the books that were great!


Who Was King Tut?


How The Spinx Got To The Musuem was an interesting book that described the process of getting an archeological find to a museum. It is amazing how many people are involved in the process before it is available to the public for viewing.


You Wouldn’t Want To Be Egyptian Mummy We had a lot of fun laughing and making disgusted faces. It really was a yucky process to be mummified. 

Eyewitness Ancient Egypt had information and great pictures about the language, culture and the daily life of the ordinary Egyptian.  

The Food


Mahlab Bread were little yeast breads that were delicious and perfect for dipping in hummus.



We made the Authentic 14 Century Hummus as dip for our bread.



We also had pistachios, dates and figs since they are popular to that part of the world. Our first dessert was Egyptian Ghorayebah cookies. These were easy as they were only 3 ingredients and very delicious.



I planned on making Egyptian Bread Pudding, but I ran out of time so that evening for dessert, I made it after dinner. It was SO delicious as it uses full fat coconut milk and homemade Palmiers. I forgot to take a picture, but I would highly recommend this.



Watercolor Travel Journal


I am sharing my final layout in my Florida Travel Journal. I shared the first few pages HERE and my Grandmother’s house portrait HERE. I really want to finish this album so I am working extra hard to complete it. I recently found a Youtube video that shared some “new to me” painting techniques. You may notice that these two pages are a bit different as I was trying out what I learned. I was painting loose and with less detailed.




Tea Day



I am joining the Tea Day ladies, hosted by Elizabeth and Bluebeard. My tea today is herbal, mint and orange peel. Since mint tea is popular in the middle east, we drank this for Tea and Poetry this week. The mint was grown in my garden and the orange peel was dried in my dehydrator. We added a bit of sugar to each cup as the little like it a bit sweet.

    A lifetime ago I was in Egypt and also in the museum in Cairo.
    It was when women were free and I have very fond memories of a friendly taxi-driver, LOL.
    He even took his to his home and his Mom cooked for us.

  • Your two Egyptian cultural areas are neat — the ancient history and the modern food. I wonder if the ancients would have recognized the dishes that you made. Your water colors as always are lovely.

  • I really love your Tea parties. I know it takes up a lot of your time in prep, but I’m sure the children will remember them forever, especially if they have been involved in preparing the food and choosing the books. Your Egyptian food looks really nice and I immediately went to the recipe for the bread pudding. We can buy palmiers here so it is something I’d love to make. You say you used coconut milk while the recipe calls for buffalo’s milk or cow’s milk (full fat) . Do you think it’s nicer with coconut milk?
    I love the photo of your tea pot. On the left is a lovely mug with a beautiful design. I happen to notice that Foxy Stamping) Sharon has a similar mug on her post , just it’s different color.
    I love your Florida journal. Especially as it contains food as well as locations. And the mint and orange peel are an inspiration. I dry my own mint but I have not dried orange peel (why not?). We have a hot dry climate here and I would not need a machine to dry things. I’m off now to buy some oranges!

    I can only imagine the amount of work that goes into one of your tea parties. I also love King Tut. I actually saw the exhibition when it toured in the states. So glad the children got to experience the stories.

    Your food looks amazing. That hummus is much thicker than the kind I make. It also uses more nuts than I use. However, it sure looks good. I bet it tasted good with those little yeast breads, too. You had a fabulous spread.

  • I thought the three-ingredient recipe looked easy, so checked it out, and I would have to buy ghee, something I don’t normally use, and it looked expensive, too. Oh, well. Love your journal pages, and the easy and loose style. Happy T Day, Kate.

  • Hi Kate! I’m so sorry i’m a bit late to the party… I had to go out of town today at the last minute.. to round up cattle if you can believe that.. !! But i loved your post! Those little are so going to remember these T parties of yours.. i think they will remember those lessons more than anything they will read in a book.. I love your water color.. Question is do you like the looser look? I ‘m a detail oriented person… so i can appreciate the looser look ( these of yours are beautiful!) but i’m really drawn to detail.. Happy happy T day!   • Ancient Egypt is such a great topic and I love that you include food and crafts. I was lucky enough to teach my special needs classes that way until a new head came along and stopped me……glad I was close to retirement!
