Remodeling With Noodles: Daily Art Practice
Couch Talk
Along with a busy schedule, we have just started a very large remodel in our house. We are starting with the Master Bedroom and moving through the top floor of our house, painting and flooring. It will be a very large job, but my talented husband has taken on the task of doing all the work himself. I don’t help much but I try to be helpful in whatever way I can. It has been a while since we remodeled, and I forgot how annoying the process can be. Our house is displaced with furniture moved to various rooms and it feels like we are living in a much smaller space that is never clean.
This is a picture before we painted. My husband got a paint sprayer, and it made the task of painting a large room much faster. Our only complaint was the amount of overspray and we spent some time scrubbing paint off doorknobs and molding. Next time I we will be covering things more thoroughly but the time saved was definitely worth it.
Daily Art Practice
My shopfront today is Karonouron, Udon Restaurant, which sells noodles, in Hakata, Fukuoka. You can find my reference photo HERE. I inked the building and then finished in watercolor. I loved the window display of dishes that the restaurant offers. Apparently, fake food, made from wax and plastic, is popular in Japan and many restaurants use it to advertise what they offer.
Tea Day

That is so true about the plastic food they put in restaurant windows. If you can’t read or understand Japanese it makes it easy to point to what you want. It’s also easy to know what each restaurant serves. I really like this week’s drawing. And good luck with your remodeling.. Beautiful painting. And I hope the remodeling job will be smooth until you cover all the rooms in home. I know remodeling is not that comfortable. But,finally, it is really worth the time and effort with new and refreshing look!

Several of the features in your picture are traditional in Japanese food shops, including as you say, the plastic molds of food items that more or less replace a written menu. Evidently there is (used to be?) a neighborhood of Tokyo where the artisans make these fake food models! The cloth banners above the door are also traditional and sometimes have logos or restaurant indications on them. I bet there is a white cat with a raised paw somewhere inside, too.

Good evening Kate, That does sound like a huge under taking but so worth it in the end. I have done allot of the painting over the years, I only painted with a brush since I never cared for rollers-for sure took a longer time-spraying would save time but I would end up with a huge mess smiles.

I’d love to do painting and flooring, but my heart just sinks when I think about it lol We could do the painting ourselves, but the furniture moving and flooring is beyond us. Good for y’all!

All the best with the remodeling. It is a mess while doing it but it will look really nice when finished. I’ve just had the whole house painted and the guy was not very precise in covering the furniture. I’m still finding paint stains on the back of my dining room chairs that I hadn’t spotted. Now it’s too late to remove them. How annoying!

Yes, the overspray đŸ™‚ Our kitchen walls are red and the ceiling has a nice frame, too, LOL.
I like renovating. Did that also often with myy brother.
Hope you get through there quick, though, we never did this whilst living in those places.

Hi Kate, you’re lucky your husband is willing to do all the work himself, very handy. I have a paint sprayer but I’ve only used it outside on the fences, I’d probably make a mess if I did it in the house lol. Your shopfront is great, I’ve seen the fake food in some of the Japanese restaurants before, it’s a bit weird. Your tea looks yummy.
