Renegade: Seth Apter Inspired Mini Art Journal

Renegade

When I think of renegades, I automatically think of my youngest son. From the time he was in my womb he was always dancing, especially at night. His favorite activity as a toddler was making messes and destroying stuff. I can’t tell you how many times, as a two year old, he raided my refrigerator when I was sleeping, leaving surprises for me to wake up too.  He left bite marks on the legs of my new coffee table from when he was cutting his first tooth. And he did it all with a big toothy grin.

I’m not going to lie, it was tough being a good mom during those days. My sweetie brought me to the breaking point as well as brought out all the flaws in my personality. Somehow, we both made it through in one piece and I can look back and be thankful that those days are over.

Here is a picture of my little renegade.  He is cuddly, sensitive, high on energy and has a creative mind. And I LOVE everything about him!

Creating the Mini Journal

I was very excited to create this journal after stalking Seth Apter’s Facebook and Instagram pages. He always puts the most amazing textures into his art!

I had this little book that I started a year or so ago using some of Seth’s new stamp release for PaperArsty. At the time, I created one layout and then put the book aside.  While cleaning out my projects-to-be-completed bin, I found this book and thought it would be the perfect project to put my inspiration into.

The Cover

I started by stamping the larger image onto kraft paper. I then painted, embossed with baked textured powder and stenciled the paper to create an aged look. I added stamping, metal embellishments and fiber.

The Page

For the first page, I stenciled using a Seth Apter stencil by StencilGirl. I used paint in the background and stamping, chipboard die cut, fiber and gesso to embellish.

I have more to share from my mini book but I will do that in another post.

  • OMGosh, Kate. Your little renegade is so cute. I can see why it might be hard to get mad at him.

Your mini-journal cover is out of this world. I could feel the texture and want to run my fingers over the texture, bumps, and lumps. I love it. I’m also fond of your first page, too. I’m sure Seth will want to feature you in the future,. You have certainly found the perfect way to be inspired and the perfect person to inspire you, too.

  • Great to hear that you and your little renegade are playing on the same team now! What a stunning album – so rich in colour and texture. What a find in the clear-out, and I can’t wait to see more pages.
