Shiny Happy People: Mixed Media Art Journal Layout
Shiny Happy People (Fake)
When it comes to real life, I don’t know any shiny happy people. Almost every one I am acquainted with in this phase of my life seems genuine and genuinely happy, with the exception of maybe one person. (Now I have all my friends wondering if they are ‘The One’)
Growing up, I was never one of the popular kids but the popular kids liked me. People thought I was funny because I made them laugh. Unfortunately, a lot of my jokes leaned towards the sarcastic side and I probably hurt a lot of feelings.
When I started dating my husband in college 15 years ago, I still had my sarcastic streak. I remember one time I joked with him (I think about his height) and I made him cry. My husband is by NO means a cry baby but he has a sensitive heart, just one of the many reasons he is perfect for me! For some reason it really hit home that my sarcasm might be funny to some but could also hurt the people I love. Needless to say, I am no longer using sarcasm to win people over. Sometimes I wonder if that makes me a totally different person than the one I was in high school. And if I am, I think my honey would agree that the sensitive me is better than the shiny happy one.
Which brings me to this journal page, tweedle dum and tweedle dee look anything but shiny and happy!
Creating The Journal Page
The Stencil Makes It
As you can guess I am sharing another page in my steampunk journal. What I think makes this page is the Art Deco Borders Stencil. I used stencil paste, rubbed embossing ink over the dry paste and applied gold embossing powder. The detail on this stencil is amazing!
The Embellishments
My stamped images have been water colored and I used PaperArtsy Infusions on my flowers. I layered the die cut gears and stamped butterflies. Pretty simple because I wanted to focus on the background stencil.

A beautiful journal spread, very elegant, with lots of wonderful details. Love the depth you achieved with your layering. Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie
Well shiny, happy, non-fake person, I wish I were playing along with you. you make the most original, unique, richly layered spreads. Both sides are simply incredible. Not sure how you got so much lift, but I adore it.
I worried a bit about that mug in front of your computer. I am such a klutz, it would have been all over the keyboard. Thanks for sharing your incredible art and your balancing act (tea cup at the computer) with us for T this week.
I love both pages Kate – both are so well balanced and make me happy looking at them! A wonderful spread! You were a teenager than – they are somewhat half-baked.
Happy T-Day ahead and wishing you a happy week!

What fantastic pages – beautiful composition and colours and so deeply thoughtful too, combined with your words today. Love the dimension but still wondering how you close the book!

I love the emotion coming through here! One of my favorites yet, the balance and imagery is perfection! Hugs, Autumn
I love your journal pages! The colours, the layers, the stenciling, and the stamped images combine to make a wonderful steampunk layout.
Kate, I’m linking you to T day so others can share these beautiful pages and the fact you are joining us for T.
A steampunk journal ! Now theres a good idea! Love me some steampunk… Funny though.. the phrase ‘Shiny Happy People ‘ never struck me that they were talking about Fake happy people… hmmm… I have a very ‘odd’ sense of humor that i apparently passed down to my daughter so that we are the only ones that laugh at our jokes… oy vey! lol Happy T day! Hugs! deb
Both pages look awesome. so much layering and details to see.
It was a good post to read, life changes as we get older.
I liked seeing your cup close by the computer, something that happens with me as well.
Happy T day wishes.
Yvonne
gorgeous journal pages! The layers are fantastic and although steampunk there is a softness to enjoy as well. Happy T day (my cup is next to me as I’m typing on the PC too:)

This is gorgeous, Kate. Thanks for sharing your story. My husband has a tender heart too. Thanks for playing along at HLS WC Challenge for October.
I loved your muse about shiny happy people, Kate. Deep – I mean that in a nice way (recognizing that the comment might be read as sarcasm 😉 When I was young, I thought I would grow up, finish changing/developing and just be me. Now I realize there is no end. We learn, grow and change our entire lifetimes. It’s a challenge, but also an exciting concept.
The Stencil Girl stencil is gorgeous, but what you did with it is outstanding! The texture and gilding are perfect to make a central focal point. The dual textured gold shapes were the first thing to grab my eye.
Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen
