Some Fools Buy, Some Fools Sell: Daily Art Practice

Couch Talk

I planned on sharing our anniversary trip today but to be honest, I didn’t feel like doing a lot this weekend. Instead of painting or being crafty, I did something I hadn’t done in a while. I read a book! Actually, two books. It was relaxing and the perfect way to “watch” the football game while being with family.

Above is a picture of some of my new art supplies that I purchased during our trip. These are my first two tubes of Daniel Smith watercolor and they are every bit as wonderful as I have heard. The colors are beautiful and they apply nicely on paper.

I also purchased two pads of watercolor paper. I decided it was time to try other brands of paper to see if it makes a difference so I came home with Arches and a pad of Strathmore. We went into a little shop that catered to “Men Only” on our trip and they had an interesting assortment of items. To my surprise, I found this little watercolor field journal. I have never painted landscapes but seeing as this book is the perfect size, I think I may need to give it a try.

Watercolor Shop Fronts

The Tong Mern Sern Antique shop in Singapore is famous for its big yellow sign hanging out front, which one are you? I love the distressed and worn exterior which I imagine is much like many of the items found inside. After browsing to find more of a back story, I found this interesting article about the owner and the shop’s history. If you have time, give it a read. Shopfronts are always more interesting when you can feel a connection to them. Reference photo HERE.

Burger Frites is another shop in Singapore that specializes in gourmet burgers and homemade fries. Just browsing their web page makes my mouth water!  I think I really like this color combination on the building. Reference photo HERE.

Tea Day

I am joining the T day ladies, hosted by Elizabeth and Bleubeard. My drink today is Mahamosa Strawberry Lychee Sencha Tea 8 oz – Loose Leaf Flavored Green Tea Blend. This is such a yummy tea and a bit on the sweet side due to the Lychee fruit, perfect as a dessert tea. I would highly recommend this tea.

Happy Tea Day,

Kate

  • Hello Kate, I love your watercolor pages very much. You have inspired me to pick up the book Watercolor me in the forest. I have been looking at this book for awhile, just got it in the mail last week. I am hoping to play with watercolors this coming winter.
    Happy T wishes Kathy

  • Sometimes we all need those changes of paces I think. It sounds like you had a super weekend with 2 books. I need a weekend like that. Smile. I am really enoying these buildings you’re sketching Kate. That looks like such a cool store. Thanks for sharing the article. It was a great read. I hope you have a great week and wonderful T day too. hugs-Erika

  • Oh what great art supplies you have purchased! I do want to try the Arches which is most often recommended by watercolor artists. And Opera pink and Paynes Gray- swoon- two of my very favorites by DS! Your shop front paintings are again amazing with wonderful detail and colors. Enjoy playing with your new supplies along with a cuppa your new tea as well. happy T day!

  • Hi Kate. Love your new art supplies, have fun using them. Your water colours are wonderful again, you really have talent. My fave is the junk shop, too funny! Happy T Day, and have a great week, hugs, Valerie

  • What a great shop sign! I guess I’m a fool for both, buying and selling. As usual I really like your watercolor shop fronts. You found a watercolor field journal in a “Men Only” shop? What is a Men Only store? I was thinking something totally different, but certainly not art supplies…

  • Kaye beautiful watercolours as usual, I watch football like that, reading, luckily my husband follows football but doesn’t watch too much
    Happy T Day

  • The Arches papers are really nice to work on. For me, they take ink, gouache, watercolors, and gilding size well. Your buildings are awesome and the yellow sign on the first shop really made me laugh. Happy T Day

  • I was just leaving Kathy a comment when I heard a “bang” and then my electricity went out. I stepped outside to see if it was just me, or everyone on the block. My next door neighbor was outside and he told me he had called the electric company and reported the outage. They said they would send someone out to check the problem. My electricity finally came back on at 11:17 this morning. It had been out since shortly before 5:00 p.m. last night, around 19 hours. My apologies if you thought I had forgotten or was ignoring you.

I love those buildings you drew and your new watercolor pads and watercolors are wonderful. I know you will out them to good use, too.

So glad you got to take time to read this week. Still, you drew some lovely paintings.

Your tea sounds delicious. I think I would love this sweet tea, too. Thanks for sharing your new art supplies, your incredible paintings, and your tea with us for T this Tuesday, dear Kate.

  • Hi Kate, it is always nice to get new art supplies. Your water color pieces are so detailed and full of color. I love them! Ohhhh to have time to read a book. Even if I can’t see very well. LOL Have a nice day.

  • There’s nothing more relaxing than to read a book. Must be a good book or an interesting one though.
Your shop fronts are lovely. I will read the background stories later. I love that sort of thing. But I am very late in commenting, so I’d better continue doing that first.
Sorry I’m late but as you regulars know, we are away on Tuesday, and today we had a power cut so I’m even later (It’s nine pm)
    A belated happy T-Day,
    Hugs,
    Lisca
