Summer Reading is Like Eating Chocolate: A Couch Adventure

Summer Reads

Reading is an important part of my year but since the whole family has been together, I have found a lot less time available to listen to audio books or to crack open a book. The library summer reading program is a favorite of mine but I wonder why they think we have more time to read in the summer than the rest of the year. I would much prefer a winter reading challenge. In past years, I have completed the bulk of my reading while my children are at school. As we all know, this year has been anything but usual so I am behind on my reading schedule. I am only at 43 out of 75 books read for the entire year. But I thought I would share a few of the books that I was able to complete this summer.

I loved this fantasy/mystery. A great read and I am wishing there was a sequel.

The 3rd in a series but can be a stand alone. It was a very interesting mystery that I never would have picked up if I hadn’t won it from Goodreads. I will definitely be picking up the first two in the series.

I found a lot of great tips in this book for interacting with my children in a way that minimizes frustration on their part as well as mine. It was a quick read and very helpful.

I read this book because it was mentioned frequently in another book that I enjoyed. Apparently, this is a classic that was written in 1863. It is an unusual story line but it teaches a lot of character traits that are missing in today’s society.

The first time I heard this book was in elementary school when our school librarian read it to our cIass aloud. I just finished reading this book to my children and they LOVED it! Mystery, Intrigue and more character building in the story line. Patricia St. John is a great author and I am planning on getting more of her books to read to my children.

Hershey: The Sweetest Place on Earth

Hubby and I took our yearly anniversary trip this past weekend to Hershey, Pennsylvania. In case you haven’t heard of Hershey, they are famous for Hershey chocolate and their amusement park, Hershey Park. The Hershey Chocolate company was founded in 1894 by Milton Hershey.

Can you believe we didn’t buy any chocolate or candy the entire time we were there?

We spent my hubby’s birthday at Hershey Park. There were not a lot of people there this year (probably due to Rona) and we had minimal wait times for the rides. We went on all the roller coasters and were thrilled that we could still tolerate the rides at the old age of 37. The new coaster this year was the Candymonium and we saved it for the last ride of the night. It is 210 ft high and 4636 foot long.

My favorite coaster was an indoor ride called the Laff Trakk. It was a glow in the dark coaster with a fun house theme that spun the car around as we went up, down and around the track. This one was 52 feet high.

On the way into the ride, they had a hall of mirrors that made you look different ways of tall, short and in between.

And here we are at the Bass Pro Shops. They have some really interesting stuffed wildlife on display. It is an outdoors shop with a waterfall inside and many varieties of fish. It is quite the experience.

Tea Day

I am joining the T day ladies over at Elizabeth and Bleubeard’s. I really thought I would have a new tea to share but we couldn’t find the tea shop I tried to visit on our trip, so sadly, I am drinking nothing new. Instead, I am sharing a photo of me at the cutest little place we found to eat in Hershey. I am eating a Reuben, minus the bread, and drinking a pot of raspberry hibiscus tea.

Happy Tea Day,

Kate

  • I was just talking about a book that a teacher read to us when I was in third grade. Experiences like that are so memorable! I have heard of “The Water Babies” but never saw even the cover, so I liked that in your post.

I wonder what type of memories children will have of this very strange year. I think the world has changed more than we realize.

    be well… mae at maefood.blogspot.com

  • Hi I enjoyed seeing your reading list, and how fun to visit Hershey- I never could handle rides even as a kid but looks like a very fun place to visit. your plate of food looks delicious. Happy T wishes Kathy

  • I finally figured out how to check out your books you had read. I would love the mystery from Hell’s Kitchen. I’ve been to Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan, so would love very much to read that book.

Looks like you had fun at the amusement park. I’d LOVE to know what your mask is made of. It is SO see through. Enjoyed seeing your Reuben and your tea, too. Thanks for sharing your book preferences, your trip to Hershey Park, your meal, and your tea with us for T this Tuesday, Kate. Tell your husband happy belated birthday, too.

  • That´s a lot of reading. I love to read on the balcony, but we had no summer…
Oh… sweets and such carousels… brrr. I just braved up (again!) to a slow ferris wheel and that´s as far as I go…
Well, we call the darn thing “Corinna”, but “Rona” is a good one, too. Seems like we get used to her?
Very nice “real” photo of you 🙂 Happy T-day.

  • Great place to go for vacation. I can’t believe you didn’t buy any chocolate. You must have very good will power. 🙂 I like that eyelet blouse you’re wearing. It sounds like you’ve read some interesting books. I keep meaning to start reading novels again. Happy T-Day!

  • You’re the second couple I know who honeymooned at Hershey Park. I didn’t get the attraction, since I’ve never been there. It looks like a lot of fun. I wonder if the prices are more reasonable than the Disney parks. Reuben without bread – what a great idea! Thank you for all the book reviews. I’ve never been much o a novel reader, but I’ve read two books since quarantine started in March. That’s a record for me – lol.

    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen

  • I’ll have to look up these authors ~ I love a good book referral, Thank you. Hershey is a fun place, we haven’t been there in years. We went around Christmas time and it was soooo cold, but we loved the tours. We had the kids design there own Hershey label, which they really enjoyed. I’m glad you had fun at the park together and your meal.

  • Fabulous post! It looks like you had a wonderful time celebrating your hubby’s birthday , the park looks awesome – happy belated birthday wishes 😁. I loved seeing all your smiles and what a lovely place to eat, your meal looks yummy 😁. Wishing you a very Happy T Tuesday! Hugs, Jo x

  • Nice you could get away for your anniversary. It looks like you had a really fun time. I’ve never been to Hershey but I have heard of it. Lots of people from my area go there on vacation. And nice collection of books. I keep a book list too, It’s always good to look back. I need to go check these out right now. Hope you had a super T day and happy September. Hugs-Erika

  • I haven’t read any of the books you mention but I”m going to look up a couple of them. I’ve been wanting a Rubin sandwich recently. I didn’t think about making one without the bread, I was too busy finding the required (for me) Russian dressing. Your meal looks good.

  • I used to love the roller coasters when I was young. Now I get motion sick and vertigo. I’ll leave the coasters to you young people. You and your hubby are so cute. Happy Birthday to him. 🎂 and a Happy T Day to you. ☕️.

  • What a fun post. Looks like you had great fun at Hersheys. The mirrors made me laugh. I love your mask. It’s beautiful. Looks like lace.
Such a lovely photo of you enjoying your reuben. Of course I had to google what a reuben is. I learnt it was corned beef, sauerkraut, swiss cheese and russian dressing. (on rye which you didn’t have). Sounds lovely.
Great to see your reading list. I have not heard of any of them. Fawkes is the one that appealed to me the most. History meets fantasy.
Happy belated T-Day (Yes, I’m late again as per usual. Tuesday is just a very busy day and I spend the whole of Wednesday catching up)

  • I really should have made a book list – I seem to have got through more books this year than ever, but then last year I did read two very long ones as part of my choices! I read the Water Babies when I was young then again to my children – I rather suspect I would enjoy it still! A couple of your others have a appeal too!
I’m afraid fast rides have never been one of my favourite things but as I have got older they are a definite ‘No,no’ , but so glad you enjoyed it! It certainly looks a colourful place to visit and the Hall of Mirrors would’ve made me smile! Love the look of the Bass Pro shop! It’s great to see you and hubby and that meal at the end looks delicious ! Belated Happy T day, Chrisx
