Who Doesn’t Like Pretty Birds?: Daily Art Practice

Couch Talk

It’s March already and I am beginning to see and hear signs of spring. Birds are chirping and we have had a few days of temperatures in the mid 60’s! I am ready for color to return to the landscape. Speaking of birds, I saw a lot of beautiful birds in Florida. I caught this picture from the window of the lanai while visiting my grandmother. From what we could tell, it looks like a Little Blue Heron. They are different colors depending on what state of development they are in. The bird on the right that is slightly blurry is just a statue.

Watercolor Shopfronts

I am sharing two Japanese shopfronts today. The first one is a Soba restaurant, Kunimatsu.  Reference photo HERE. I could not find an online menu. I think this is common for a lot of the smaller shops in Japan. Or perhaps I just don’t know where to look online. When choosing a photo to paint, I was drawn to this one because I loved the tile roof as well as the various tiles on the exterior. And all those plants!!

Kizushi is a Japanese sushi restaurant that I found on Storefronts.Japan on Instagram. I looked for a menu but was unable to find a website. The reference photo HERE is beautiful and is the most saved photo on this Instagram page. I really enjoyed painting all the textures on this building.

Tea Day

I am joining the Tea Day ladies, hosted by Elizabeth and Bleubeard. My tea today is one that has become a favorite. I scored this delicious Bengal Spice Tea today for $1 a box at our local Sharp Shopper. I stocked up with 6 boxes. I don’t shop there often as most of their products are pre-packaged but sometimes one can score a good deal. Today was my day.

Happy Tea Day,

Kate

  • I love those banners that they hang above the doors of shops in Japan. Did you ever see the TV series called “MidnightDiner”? The noodle shop in the series has a nice doorway, but it’s mostly seen from inside. (It’s a pretty old series.)

  • Good evening , Love your watercolor art, I have not tried that tea yet and wow excellent price for sure.
    Happy T Kathy

  • It is amazing all the kinds of birds in Florida. It must have been a nice trip. I know when I went to Japan in 2018 one thing almost all Japanese restaurants had were plastic models of their foods in the windows so you could see what they had. But we did have menus.. It’s a fascinating building you shared this week.. I hope you have a great T day and week ahead. And maybe even have more signs of spring. Hugs-Erika

  • Kate, beautiful birds and interesting plant too! Great shop fronts – I am blown away as always by your talent.

Great score on the tea – you are such a great deal finder!!!

    Happy T-day and hugz

  • How lovely to visit Florida and what fun to see the blue heron too – so pretty! Your Japanese shop fronts are so detailed, loving all the roof tiles, plants and the vase in the doorway looks so beautifully painted 😁. I’d love to try that spice tea too – wishing you a very Happy T Day! Hugs Jo x

  • My sincere apologies for this universal message, but my electricity has been off from about 4:25 Monday afternoon until shortly after 7:40 this morning. A transformer blew in my neighborhood. I heard the boom and felt the aftershock. It was a bitterly cold, windy night, so once my hands get warm and I get hot coffee and food in me, and I’ve had a chance to sleep (sleep was impossible in the cold), I’ll be by to visit properly. In the meantime, please accept my apology for not leaving a proper comment.

  • What a lovely heron. In Holland there are many herons but I have never seen a blue/dark one.
The water color shop fronts are gorgeous. Yes, I like that tiled roof too. Beautiful.
I know Celestial teas but have never come across this one. It sounds nice. Enjoy.
Happy T-Day (And happy Women’s Day),
    Hugs,
    Lisca

  • The watercoors are wonderful. Well done. I like that brand of tea although I haven”t tried that particular flavor. I will have to look for it.

  • Isn’t it wonderful to hear the birds singing? I love your shop front sketches – you capture so much detail! I have been trying some herbal teas lately – I have to check that they don’t contain real tea though! Belated Happy T Day, Chrisx
