Wild Roses and a Hedgehog: Daily Art Practice

Couch Talk

Last week, my husband brought me home this lovely bouquet of flowers. I snapped a couple of pictures in the hopes of painting them in the future. Flowers were something that my grandfather and my dad painted beautifully. Me, not so much. My flowers look like an abstract blob of paint in the center of the page. Many artist focus on florals but it has never been something that really captures my attention. I love flowers and visiting formal gardens but I have yet to make a detailed painting of a flower that actually looks like one.  One of these days I will give flowers a try again and when I do, I have the photos of this bouquet for practice.

Things are starting to warm up, but in PA that means we will have a second winter. I am looking forward to seeing the flowers again which may encourage me to get outside and paint. A few of my favorite flowers, which we don’t have here in the Northeast, are the Lotus and Bird of Paradise. Their shape and colors are unique, and I think that is why I like them.

What is your favorite flower and why?

Daily Art Practice

I have some projects in the works that are taking most of my painting time, so I am sharing paintings from one of my favorite books, Watercolor With Me In The Forest. This is my go-to book for painting when I want to relax and I highly recommend it. The sketching is already done, you just have to have fun painting.

Tea Day

I am joining the tea day ladies, hosted by Elizabeth & Bleubeard. My tea today is Gaia Herbs Gas and Bloating Tea. As you know, I suffer from digestive problems. I gave this new-to-me tea a try and I really enjoyed it. The flavor wasn’t unpleasant and it served its purpose well, if you know what I mean.

Happy Tea Day,

Kate

  • My mother always painted flowers, and I cherish some of her watercolors and pastels. Good luck if you decide to work on that skill!

  • The flowers from your husband are beautiful. Are they for Valentine’s Day? I think that hedgehog would be easier than the flowers in that book. I can see why you like it so much.

Your tea sounds lovely, except I can’t envision adding fennel.. I am SO glad it works for you, Kate. Thanks for sharing your adorable flowers, your go to painting book, and your tea with us for T this week, dear Kate.

  • I love all flowers I don’t think I have a favorite. I have that watercolor book too-I need to get that out.
    Happy T Hugs Kathy

  • What a beautiful bouquet of flowers Kate. Your husband must be a sweet guy. I love flowers of all kinds, yet when I create them I never seem to have ideas what to draw or paint. I just make 5 petal flowers that look like the came out of the 1960s. One day you’ll probably be inspired, and if not, there are so many other beautiful things to draw-like those buildings you do. Have you done any recently? I hope you have a great T day, Valentine’s Day and week ahead Kate. Hugs-Erika

  • Thanks for the tip about Dana’s watercolor book. I feel like that might be the place for start. Happy T Day.

  • Hubby brought me gerbera – in a pot. The big ones died, there are two wee ones, hope they make it!
But actually I love poppies. Why? They are fragile, yet stand for strength. And they are beautiful.

Interesting book. Oh, I really need a holiday! A real holiday!

Your tea would be perfect for hubby (if you know what I mean ;-)…) will look for something like that here, thank you and happy T-Day!

  • Beautiful flowers Kate. I hope you can paint them at some point. I know what you mean about how they turn out though, sometimes mine look like flowers and sometimes not. Practice makes perfect I keep telling myself but then I really need to allocate time to actually practice. I have been itching to go outside and paint/sketch but it’s just too cold still – probably when it warms up I won’t feel like it or won’t have the time! Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx

  • What a pretty bouquet! Weather around here isn’t predictable this time of year. My FB memories are of ice and snow, but our high yesterday was 67. I don’t really have a single favorite flower, but I like sunflowers, daisies, black-eyed susans, zinnias…

    Happy T Tuesday!

  • How sweet of your husband to get you a bunch of flowers. And very beautiful they are too. I bought myself some tulips. Being Dutch, I love tulips and I miss having flowers everywhere like we do in the Netherlands.
    Happy T-Day and Valentine’s Day,
    Hugs,
    Lisca

  • Your painting is always lovely Kate.. and i enjoy seeing what you paint. I LOVE flowers so very difficult to narrow it down but i did try.. For cut flowers i enjoy carnations because they come in a rainbow of colors , last forever and are economical… Gladiolas are THE flower for me… One year hubby founds some in purple!!! my favorite color! One day i hope to have a Rose Garden where i can collect roses.. Happy T day! Hugs! deb

  • A lovely bouquet. My favorite flowers are white roses and blue hydrangeas. Aw, your hedgehogs are cute. That sounds like a good tummy tamer. I could have used that tea today, too. Happy T Day
